Buy a 'Crave Pallet' and do some good for once in your life

If you have a big heart, $25,000 of disposable income, and a fondness for White Castle, here’s a deal for you: the burger chain is upping the ante on its 30-count Crave Cases and 100-burger Crave Crates by selling a supersized "Crave Pallet" — a skid containing 6,912 sliders with or without cheese and jalapeños — with all proceeds benefiting autism research. Jamie Richardson, vice president of White Castle notes, "We believe it's important to fund autism research because it touches so many children and families." In addition to the mountain of meat, guests can enjoy the smell of 216 White Castle steam-grilled-on-a-bed-of-onions Nest Fragrance candles, in case the actual smell of burgers cooking isn’t strong enough.

Attempting such a massive slider structure is no easy feat, so White Castle chefs will be on hand to cook the burgers to order for up to 1,000 people, meaning wealthy hermits need not apply.

One in 58 British children is autistic, new figures reveal

Almost twice as many children in Britain could have autism than previously thought, researchers say.

A study has found that as many as one in 58 may have some form of the condition - well above the widely-accepted existing estimate of one in 100.

If so, it would mean that around 210,000 children under 16 in the UK have autism or a related disorder.

The leader of the Cambridge University study, autism expert Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, said the higher figure was not linked to use of the controversial MMR jab.

However, two members of his team are understood to privately believe that the triple vaccination may be to blame for the rise.

Their fears follow claims from experts that injecting children with the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine - rather than three separate jabs - can cause autism.

Autism is an umbrella term for a range of developmental disorders that have a lifelong effect on the ability to interact socially and communicate.

There are related problems, known as autism spectrum disorders, which include Asperger's syndrome, which also require special teaching needs.

Estimates of the number of children with autism have been edging up for more than a decade. In the 1990s, it was believed there were around four or five cases of autism in every 10,000 people - rising to 20 cases if other ASD problems were included.

Later this was revised upwards to one in 100, the widely-accepted estimate among British scientists.

Last year a study suggested the figure may be as high as one in 86, and now the Cambridge team say it could be as high as one in 58.

It is not known whether the rise is down to better diagnosis of the condition, or because the numbers with autism are actually rising.

Professor Baron-Cohen and his team arrived at their estimate by studying the incidence of autism and ASD among 12,000 children at Cambridgeshire primary schools between 2001 and 2004.

He said possible factors behind the rise were genetics, environmental factors such as greater use of pesticides and children's exposure to hormones such as testosterone in the womb.

He said: "As for MMR, at this point one can conclude that evidence does not support the idea that the MMR causes autism."

However, two of the seven-strong team - Dr Fiona Scott and Dr Carol Stott - said the jab, which is given at 12 or 15 months, could be a factor in small numbers of children.

The MMR scare began in 1998 when Dr Andrew Wakefield, a gastroenterologist at the Royal Free Hospital in North London, wrote an article in The Lancet which linked the jab to autism and inflammatory bowel disease.

Despite further research debunking the claims, some mothers opted to go private and pay for three separate jabs or missed the jab altogether.

This month Dr Wakefield could be struck off the medical register following a General Medical Council hearing-over claims of dishonesty and irresponsibility over the research.

Ivan Corea, head of the Autism Awareness Campaign UK, said he hoped the increased estimate would prompt the Government to improve services because autistic people were at the mercy of a 'postcode lottery'.

He said: "We are urging Gordon Brown to provide a world-class education for all children with autism, to provide new specialist autism schools, even special needs academies and autism units equipped with sensory rooms in mainstream primary and secondary schools."

However, the benefits were only seen in boys and not girls – a result scientists are at a loss to explain.

Recommended jabs for all children by the age of 18

Vaccinations for various unpleasant and deadly diseases are given free on the NHS to children and teenagers.

Here is a list of all the jabs someone should have by the age of 18 to make sure they and others across the country are protected:

  • 6-in-1 vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), and hepatitis B.
  • Pneumococcal (PCV)
  • Rotavirus
  • Meningitis B
  • Hib/meningitis C
  • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
  • Third dose of PCV and meningitis B

Three years, four months old

  • Second dose of MMR
  • 4-in-1 pre-school booster for diptheria, tetanus, polio and whooping cough

Researchers admit they do not yet know why the jab seems to have a protective effect for the lungs.

However, some previous studies have suggested catching measles itself can reduce the chances of getting asthma.

Since the MMR vaccine contains a small amount of the live measles virus, it is possible it is mimicking the effects of the disease itself.

In a report on the findings researchers said: 'Live vaccines may have beneficial effects.

'The MMR vaccine may have a protective effect against asthma for boys.'

Measles vaccination rates in the UK have fallen in recent years, partly driven by anti-vaccination propaganda on social media.

Unicef estimates more than half-a-million children in Britain went unvaccinated against measles between 2010 and 2017.

Vaccination rates among five-year-olds have fallen to just 87 per cent - well below the 95 per cent the World Health Organisation says is vital to prevent outbreaks.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned recently he was willing to look at 'all options' to boost childhood vaccination levels, including making jabs compulsory for school attendance.

Previous investigations into the MMR jab's links with asthma have been inconclusive.

Some have suggested it may actually increase the risk, while others have found the opposite.

Asthma affects more than 5million people in the UK - and around three people a day die from the disease around the country.

A controversial 1995 study by disgraced British researcher Dr Andrew Wakefield claimed the MMR jab was linked with an increased risk of autism.

The research was later found to be flawed and Wakefield was struck off by the General Medical Council.

A recent investigation confirmed no link between the inoculation and autism after scientists analysed data on more than 650,000 children given the jab.

Some children with asthma do not receive a diagnosis for more than three years, research suggests

An Asthma UK poll found that one in five youngsters with asthma had to wait more than three years to be diagnosed.

The study included 778 parents, of whom 151 (19 per cent) said their child had waited more than 36 months.

Twenty-three per cent of parents said they'd taken more than 10 days off work to look after their child in the run-up to them being diagnosed.

Asthma UK said it can be difficult for GPs to diagnose asthma in children under five because their lungs are not fully developed and they can find it hard to breathe out forcefully for asthma peak flow tests.

Symptoms such as coughing and wheezing can also be caused by other conditions such as viruses.

On average, more than 25,000 children are hospitalised in the UK with asthma each year.

Dr Andy Whittamore, clinical lead at Asthma UK, said: 'Seeing your child struggling to breathe or rushed to hospital and not knowing what is wrong is every parent's nightmare.

'This agonising wait for an asthma diagnosis can take years, leaving parents feeling helpless, frustrated and confused.

'Something as simple as keeping a diary of your child's symptoms for a couple of weeks or filming your child's symptoms on your phone could really help to give your child's GP the full picture.'

Dr Samantha Walker, director of research and policy at Asthma UK, said: 'Diagnostic tools for asthma - especially for children under five - are not fit for purpose.

'GPs are doing the best they can with the tools they have, but without more effective ways to diagnose asthma, their efforts are often wasted.

'Currently available tests are not able to differentiate between asthma and other conditions that can cause wheezing in children.

'The tests that can help are time-consuming and are not suitable for young children.

'The only option is for GPs to diagnose 'suspected asthma', which is understandably frustrating for parents.

'In line with the NHS England's Long Term Plan, funding bodies need to commit to invest in research to develop new and improved diagnostic tools for asthma, including tests that can be used in young children.'

A new programme, set to air on BBC One tonight, follows four volunteers as they try to slash their sugar intake and in turn, improve their health.

In it, presenter and journalist Fiona Phillips sets out to explore The Truth About Sugar, as the show is called.

She said: 'I always thought low fat was the way to go, saturated fat was the enemy because it raises cholesterol.

'Then there was a big war on salt, because it raises blood pressure.

'But something innocent looking in our cupboards for centuries is public enemy number one - sugar.'

The World Health Organisation recommendeds that added sugars should make up no more than 10 per cent of a person's daily energy intake

Between them, the four volunteers - Cara Patterson, Rick Shabilla, Audrey Cannon and Simon Gallagher - devour a staggering 119 teaspoons of sugar a day.

Their challenge is to banish 95 teaspoons between them, to achieve the gold standard of six teaspoons each a day.

The show uncovers why some of us have more of a sweet tooth than others, which sugars you can enjoy guilt free, and why there is so much sugar hidden in food you would think was purely savoury

It also examines the effect sugary drinks have on our appetites.

The perils of fizzy drinks

Leading the sugar league table, 26-stone Simon Gallagher drinks his way through 39 teaspoons of sugar a day - roughly five cans of a day.

It means that over the course of a year, the fizzy drink addict piles 57 kilos or 14,000 tsp of sugar into his body.

'On a normal day I would have three or four cans of pop,' he says during the programme.

'If I am at home it can be any amount until I feel sick basically, or until I have not got any left.'

The volunteer with the next highest sugar intake is Rick Shabilla, who has a family history of type 2 diabetes and eats his way through 29 teaspoons of sugar a day.

Rick comes from a Sikh family and has a weakness for sugary Indian sweets, a staple at religious ceremonies.

In third place Cara, a teaching assistant and mother to four-year-old Noah, craves sugar the minute she wakes up.

Her daily diet includes 28 tsp of sugar - almost five times the target.

The ready meals packed with sugar

'I am definitely addicted to sugar, I crave it,' she said.

The worst time is I want sugar as soon as I wake up. Breakfast always contains something sweet, whether it's cake, biscuits or chocolate.'

And finally Audrey, who lives on the road fulfilling her role as an acquisitions manager, relies on processed ready meals as a quick solution to tackle her hunger.

Her daily diet is packed with 23 tsp a day - largely hidden in the convenience food she eats on the go.

The show uncovers high levels of sugar hidden in seemingly savoury ready meals and other processed foods

Faced with their daunting six tsp target, each volunteer embarks on the seemingly impossible challenge.

Banning ready meals from their diets, the four are shown how to make fresh, healthy sauces using pineapple as a substitute for sugar.

Also on the banished list are fizzy drinks - as it emerges there are around 20 tsp of sugar in a small bottle of ginger beer - and biscuits are eradicated from the cupboards.

And the results were staggering.

And it reveals how having a fizzy drink before eating causes a person to eat more, because the calories from sugar are not enough to satisfy hunger pangs

Cutting back on the white poison - the secrets to success

For Simon, Audrey and Cara their new sugar-free diet helped them lose 6kgs each - almost a stone.

But Rick failed to lose as much weight, after substituting lager for Indian sweets.

Having been warned he was at a very high risk for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, Simon discovers his new-found favourite drink.

Swapping sugary drinks for fizzy water with cut up fruit to add flavour, has helped reduce his markers for the life-threatening disease by between 40 and 70 per cent.

He managed the incredible feat of slashing his sugar intake from 39 tsp to just a quarter of a teaspoon, just by keeping his fridge free of sugary, fizzy drinks.

For Audrey, the experiment proved a resounding success, cutting her intake from 23 tsp to just a quarter of a teapsoon.

And her secret? Home cooking.

By bulk cooking her own versions of her favourite ready meals, the busy acquisitions manager managed to improve her health dramatically.

Meanwhile, for Cara, relying on willpower alone allowing her to take control of her cravings, she cuts her intake from 28 tsp to just three a day.

And Rick just misses the target, dropping from 29 tsp to just seven.

Over the course of the show, experts measure the brain activity of the volunteers when they are eating sugar, revealing we are hard wired to seek out high energy food, in turn causing our brains to reward us for eating sugar.

And it uncovers how people who have a sugary drink before eating are more likely to gorge on greater quantities of food, because the calories from sugar fail to satisfy hunger pangs.

The Truth About Sugar is on BBC One at 9pm tonight.

By Dr Sally Norton, founder of Vavista and Vavista Awards

Despite my fears that The World Health Organisation's attempts to produce clear guidance on sugar consumption would be thwarted by the sugar industry, it seems they have held strong.

The new recommendations are that adults and children should limit intake of free sugars to less than 10 per cent of our daily intake, and ideally aim for five per cent.

Whereas some sugar in our diet is easy to spot, free sugars are those added to food. It's not just the spoonfuls added to hot drinks, but also sugar added to processed foods and those present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates

Free sugars are the added sugars we have in our diet. That's not just the spoonfuls of white stuff we ladle into cups of tea or sprinkle over cereal.

1. Sugars added to foods and drink by the manufacturer, cook or consumer.

2. Sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates. So when you read ‘natural fruit sugar’, ‘only nature’s own sugar added’, ‘sweetened only with honey’, ‘sweetened with apple juice’ and countless others, don’t be fooled for a second – think ‘sugar’.

The only sugars not included in the term 'free sugar' are those found naturally in whole fruit and vegetables and in milk.

There is no evidence to suggest that these sugars are associated with any harmful effects – and the benefits of having plenty of fruit, vegetables and milk are likely to far outweigh any possible adverse effects of the sugar they contain. (However, be aware – some fruits can be very high in sugar).

Taking the rough calculation of 2,000 calories per day as the amount of energy we need from our food and drink, the WHO recommends that no more than 10 per cent of that, or 200 calories, should be from added sugar.

That is the equivalent to around 12 teaspoons. If we go a step further and aim for just five per cent of our calorie intake from free sugar, we are talking only six teaspoons worth.

To try and banish added sugars from your diet, start trying to gradually reduce your sweet tooth by cutting back on the amount of sugar you knowingly add to tea, coffee, cereal, experts advise

It's not so easy when you consider a can of coke or a glass of orange juice contains 50 per cent more than the ideal daily intake - around nine teaspoons of sugar.

A bowl of cereal can contain more than three teaspoons, a shop bought sandwich may contain a teaspoon or more and even a can of soup contains five teaspoons.

We won't even think about the 20 teaspoons reportedly found in a large Chai latte from a major coffee shop chain. It soon adds up.

The WHO commissioned two major reviews of research.

One looked at the association of sugar with increased weight, which, after all, is proving to be a major health crisis.

The second looked at sugar and dental caries or tooth decay.

Dr Sally Norton said even if you can't manage six to 12 tsps a day, cutting down will boost your health

We heard last year that one in 10 of our three year olds are now suffering from tooth decay due to sugary drinks and fruit juices, with the problem getting worse as children get older, so this is a real issue.

The WHO states 'higher intakes of free sugars threaten the nutrient quality of diets by providing significant energy without specific nutrients' – in other words, sugar is full of empty calories that our bodies are better off without.

This comes hot on the heels of news that there has been a cover-up for years about the effect that sugar has on our teeth.

Way back in the 50s and 60s, documents show that the US sugar industry knew that sugar caused dental caries and managed to shift focus away from this towards other public health research and interventions that did not restrict the intake of sugar.

It's sobering to know how industry profit can take priority over the health of a nation.

Without getting obsessive about it, I think there are three main areas we can tackle.

1. Extract that sweet tooth

Start trying to gradually reduce your sweet tooth by cutting back on the amount of sugar you knowingly add to tea, coffee, cereal etc.

Replace sugary drinks with water wherever possible and you will soon find that extra sweetness too much to take.

2. Consider sugar substitutes

I am not advocating artificial sweeteners long-term, as cutting back our need for sweetness is what we are aiming for and sweeteners may have their own problems.

But if you need help in weaning yourself off those sugar highs, a sugar substitute may be useful for a while.

Xylitol or Stevia products seem to be associated with fewer reports of adverse effects (so far at least).

Most importantly, read labels and look carefully for the hidden or mis-leadingly labeled sugars that are found in 85 per cent of the food and drink products on our supermarket shelves.

Look at the sugar content in grammes on the label and divide by four to work out how many teaspoons of sugar that means per serving, not per 100g.

Even if you don't manage to keep to six or 12 teaspoons per day, you will at least become more aware of where those sugars are lurking and you are likely to think twice before tucking in.

Lexington: Bad vibrations

THIS week Lexington had lunch with a bogeyman. In the cool hush of a law firm’s conference room, 45 floors above central Los Angeles, he munched sandwiches with California’s most successful living Republican, Pete Wilson, a three-term mayor of San Diego later elected four times statewide as a senator, then governor. On the same day, the din of the Republican presidential race reached California, ahead of its primary election on June 7th. At a rally in Orange County Senator Ted Cruz of Texas predicted that the state—which usually votes too late to pick presidential candidates—will be decisive this time. That may be right: if the front-runner, Donald Trump, does badly in California he will not have enough delegates to avoid a contested national convention.

A busy working lawyer at 82, Mr Wilson is following the race closely. As governor from 1991-99 he led his state through a recession, riots and earthquakes to an economic boom. Working with Democrats to fix a budget crisis and a supporter of legal abortion and gay rights, he judged voters shrewdly, helping Republicans to their first majority in the state Assembly in decades.

Yet bad vibrations still hang about him. Critics, starting with Democrats and advocates for Latinos in California (who are now 38% of the state’s population, equalling whites of European descent), blame Mr Wilson’s tough line on illegal immigration, and above all his support for Proposition 187, a ballot initiative in 1994 that sought to deny state services to unlawful residents, including free schooling for some 300,000 children, and sought to order teachers and doctors to report pupils and patients who might lack legal status. The proposition passed easily, backed by TV spots that showed migrants sprinting across the Mexican border as a narrator intoned, “They Keep Coming”.

Courts soon blocked most of the proposition’s rules, but critics assert that the political fallout lingers. In 1990 Mr Wilson won almost half the Latino vote. Four years later he got just a quarter of it, and—apart from a blip when Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor in 2003—Californian Latinos have increasingly fled the Republican Party. That ended years of Latino movement towards the Republicans, notably after a 1986 immigration reform by a Californian governor turned president, Ronald Reagan, who breezed that with their family values and work ethic, “Latinos are Republicans, they just don’t know it yet.” In the decade after Proposition 187 over 1m new Latinos registered to vote in California, and most were Democrats. A once-mighty California Republican Party has not won a statewide office since 2006. Latinos did not single-handedly deliver California to the Democrats, but their hostility makes a Republican recovery dauntingly hard.

Republicans are divided on whether Mr Wilson is to blame. Wooing Latinos during his first presidential campaign, George W. Bush said that he opposed the “spirit” of Proposition 187, seeming to chide Mr Wilson. Against that, many conservatives call it a “myth” that a fierce line on immigration killed Republicans in America’s most-populous state. The debate is of more than academic interest. The demographic transformation of California is being repeated at national level, with white Americans of European descent on course to become a minority around 2044. Today Mr Wilson condemns Mr Trump’s talk of Mexico flooding America with rapists as “boorish and grossly unfair”. But other Republicans express immigration views similar to Mr Wilson’s old policies. Mr Cruz, for one, wants more border fencing and a big increase in Border Patrol agents. Like Mr Wilson, the Texan senator questions the “birthright citizenship” granted to babies born in America, even to mothers with no legal status. Echoing Mr Wilson, Mr Cruz praises migrants who came the right way, summarising his immigration views as “Legal good, illegal bad”.

It matters, therefore, when Mr Wilson concedes that voter perceptions of his immigration policies “played a significant role” in successive election losses for Californian Republicans. To be sure, he adds many caveats. The Republican who tried to succeed him as governor, Dan Lungren, was hurt by opposing abortion, he argues, losing the women’s vote “by a large margin”. Mr Wilson scolds the press for deliberately omitting the word “illegal” from discussions of illegal immigration, and for deeming “anti-immigrant” anyone demanding a secure border. He is cross that his TV ads in 1994 are called harsh: he calls “They Keep Coming” a “statement of fact”. He accuses Democrats of pushing the “contemptible” lie that Republicans are racists (it is true that when Mr Wilson left office, San Francisco’s black Democratic mayor, Willie Brown, said of him: “He is no racist. His problem was his party”).

Mr Wilson says that he backed Proposition 187 to prod the federal government to action, and to spur review of a Supreme Court ruling of 1982 that states must offer all children a free education. Had unlawful-resident children lost that right, California would have helped them to “transition” and not expelled them instantly, he insists. Still, after criticising what he calls “demagoguery” aimed at convincing Latinos that Republicans are bigots, he concludes: “Unhappily, it was successful with a great many, and has been successful with young people as well.”

Lexington put it to Mr Wilson that a lesson for Republicans is that many voters do not draw his sharp distinction between legal and illegal immigrants. Border-crossing is not like bank-robbery. Sometimes good people come the wrong way, including kids. Surely Republicans need a plan for the country’s roughly 11.3m undocumented residents that sounds both realistic and humane?

Mr Wilson calls that premature: secure the border before discussing what to do with those here unlawfully, he retorts. That will restore public trust and avoid encouraging new arrivals: if Washington politicians broker an amnesty first, “then the damn border will never be secure”. Lots of Republicans agree with him.
